Ivan was born in 1976 in Masaka, Uganda. After his studies at Makerere University he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in 2001. He is one of the few artists who have specialized in working on bark cloth. “I seek to promote the aesthetic of bark cloth and by decorating it with objects and artifacts, communicate contemporary concerns. I explore new approaches to embellish the surface of the bark cloth through techniques like collage, embroidery, appliqué, printing and painting.” He is inspired by social and cultural issues and would describe his art as abstract and symbolic.
He has participated in several exhibitions like the Young Artists award at Tulifanya Gallery, now known as AKA gallery, group Shows of Ugandan artists in Denmark, East African Art Biennale, Dar es Salam, Tanzania, Northumbria University, UK, Uganda Museum, Kampala and University of North Texas, USA.
